The Best Fig Recipes

In celebration of one of our favourite energy-boosters, we have gathered together the best fig recipes (and date recipes, which are different but equally lovely). Figs and dates appear in ancient Egyptian tombs, classical Greek literature and in the Bible. They originated in the Middle East and Mediterranean and that’s still where most of them are grown, although the Southwestern United States is catching up! We usually see them as dried fruit in the UK.

The differences between the two include:

  • Dates are the fruit of the date palm tree whilst figs come from fig trees and are not, technically ‘fruit’.
  • Dates are among the sweetest of fruits and go through several stages in their development from unripened fruit to the dark, soft, sun-dried fruit commonly found in supermarkets.
  • Figs on the other hand have the highest concentration of minerals of any fruit, including calcium, potassium and iron as well as being high in fiber.
