The Primal Pantry Founder: A Day In The Life

Suzie Walker founded Primal Pantry, the UK’s 1st vegan Paleo Bar producers. Primal Pantry bars are made with nuts, dried fruit and almond oil, that’s it! They’re also suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Suzie says: I normally get up between half 6 and 7 as I have to get my daughter Grace ready for school and take our dog Rio for a walk. The first thing I do in the morning is put on the kettle for a cup of coffee. I’m lucky that I only live 15 minutes away from work, so after I’ve dropped Grace off to school I can be in the office ready to start the day at 9.

I graduated with a degree in marketing and worked for large-industry companies such as Nestle, Innocent and Little Dish for over ten years. I always wanted to start my own business though, so I left to study nutrition in London so I could run my own private nutritional therapy clinic. The idea for The Primal Pantry came about when I was making snacks for my clients. They were struggling to find products on the market that were healthy, gluten free, natural and clean. I made up some samples and everyone loved them. I developed the recipes, found a manufacturer, created and designed the packaging and here we are! The experience I gained studying nutrition helped in the development of The Primal Pantry products, and my previous experience in the food industry is what I use each day running the business. As cliché as it may sound, I don’t think I have a favourite bit of my job, as every day is different and exciting as we continually expand. I really enjoy developing new products and flavours (we’ve just released our latest Cocoa Brownie high protein bar) and I also love going on social media and interacting with people who are fans of our brand.

In terms of role models I’ve always been a great fan of Jo Malone as she set up her own business (with no qualifications gained at school) to do what she loved best – fragrances. She started out from her flat and now she is known all over the world for her products. A lovely, inspiring lady! My daughter Grace was also a big inspiration for The Primal Pantry as I didn’t want her to grow up eating food that was overly processed and full of sugar and junk. She is actually one of the main taste-testers of each new recipe we bring out!

I follow a paleo diet which means lots of grass fed meat, organic free range eggs from chickens down our lane, variety of veggies and lots and lots of dark chocolate as a treat. The Paleo diet doesn’t include gluten, grains, refined sugars and limited dairy. I finish work depending on what time Grace finishes school – me and my husband alternate pick ups so I could leave the office anytime between 4 -6pm. I’m very guilty of working when I get home though! I normally start to relax about 10pm and that is on the sofa in front of Sky Atlantic! I spend the majority of weekends out with my husband, daughter and friends. Rio also is a gorgeous but very energetic staffie, so we need to make sure we walk her a lot! I’m really getting into CrossFit at the moment, I go to my local CrossFit box down in Slough. It’s the best (and most insane) type of exercise around!
